About Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE)

The Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) is a statutory body set up by the Government of India, under Ministry of Power. It was established on 1st March 2002 under the provisions of India’s 2001 Energy Conservation Act.

The primary objective of the agency is to assist in developing policies and programs within the framework of the Energy Conservation Act, 2001 and the National Mission on Enhanced Energy Efficiency (NMEEE) on enhancing the conservation and efficient use of energy in India. BEE coordinates with designated consumers, industries, manufacturers and other organisations to perform the functions assigned to it under the Energy Conservation Act.

BEE carries out both regulatory and promotional activities.

Regulatory activities of BEE:

  • Set performance standards and design labelling scheme for appliances
  • Develop energy efficiency code for buildings and industries
  • Certification of energy managers and auditors to perform energy audits
  • Develop norms for energy consumption

    • Promotional activities of BEE:

  • Create promotional programs for energy efficiency, star-rating and conservation and other awareness programs
  • Arrange and organize trainings for people who can carry out energy efficiency projects.
  • Develop testing and certification procedures and promote testing facilities
  • Promote innovative financing of energy efficiency projects
  • Give financial assistance to institutions for promoting efficient use of energy and its conservation
  • Prepare educational curriculum on efficient use of energy and its conservation
  • Promote research and development
  • Strengthen consultancy services in the field of energy conservation
  • Formulate and facilitate implementation of pilot projects and demonstration projects
  • Promote use of energy efficient processes, equipment, devices and systems
  • Take steps to encourage preferential treatment for use of energy efficient equipment or appliances
  • Implement international co-operation programmes relating to efficient use of energy and its conservation.
